Why I believe
there can only be one Truth
Why I believe
I chose to start this series because I have been
reading many blogs that either attack Christianity or make everything equal. The
purpose of this series is not to debate anyone else (we can always do that
another time) or trash anyone or their beliefs. I am going to make an attempt to
show why I believe Christianity is the only way to God. So far in design I have
the following topics in which I will write about (although I do retain the right
to add a subject as needed):
-
Why I believe that there can only be one Truth
-
Why I believe that there is a Creator
-
Why I believe in Christ (historical, logical, and relational approach)
Now I know that even in my writing this series
it may not convince anyone to seek after God. Seeking after God is not usually
obtained by an intellectual approach alone but rather an experiential belief. If
someone is not interested in seeking out truth or seeking truth from only one
perspective then they would not be swayed by thousands of convincing arguments.
One is able to rationalize almost anything in whatever way they so choose. Even
I am fully convinced intellectually that Christianity is the only way because I
have looked at information and have decided to rationalize it in a way that does
not make sense to me to rationalize it another way. Some go to great lengths to
rationalize and others do not go far enough. I hope I fall in the middle.
With that being said let me begin with my first
“Why I believe”
Why I believe that there can only be one Truth
Take a look at this story:
A history professor was standing before his
class one day giving a lecture on Genghis Khan. After several minutes of
instruction the professor noticed a student talking with another student.
“Excuse me gentlemen. Do you have something to
contribute?” he asked.
“Well, umm, not really. We just don’t believe
that Genghis Khan ever existed,” one of the students replied.
“Oh, you don’t do you? Then how do you explain
the historical evidence of his existence? How do you explain the birth of the
Mongolian Empire?” the professor replied.
“Well we have several explanations,” the student
replied.
“Oh? Please tell.”
“Well to begin with all history is written by
man and therefore are flawed due to whoever is writing the history agenda.”
“Really, then how do you explain the historical
documents that were in his time in which the current history books were written
from?” the professor asked.
“Well even then they were writing it from their
perspective and could have made mistakes to help make a national hero.”
“And the historical documents that mention him
outside of his own people?”
“Some documents were probably either manipulated
by the people who claimed there was a Genghis Khan and others were written by
people who were fooled by the people of the Mongolian Empire,” the student
replied.
“Well then the Mongolian Empire came into
existence because of whom then?” the professor asked again.
“The Mongolian Empire had a leader or a group of
leaders and made up the legend of Genghis Khan because someone like him would
have been more heroic for the people and more of a threat to the surrounding
kingdoms.”
“Your arguments are unfounded and untrue. There
is plenty of historical evidence to show that Genghis Khan did exist,” the
professor responded.
“Well we don’t believe them at all. It is your
responsibility as one who says he exists to prove it. We believe that the
evidence presented so far is not really evidence at all but instead a historical
hoax.”
“Well then you will not be satisfied by any
historical evidence at all and you will continue to manipulate what is in
existence,” the professor sighed. He thought to himself that these students were
products of manipulated revisionist history and the post-modern thoughts of many
truths being acceptable. Neither student passed the class.
The second story has a bit of a different take:
Twenty-three year old Bill was arraigned in
court today for stealing a radio and cds from the college dorms where he went to
school. He entered the plea of “Not guilty”.
His lawyer Jack Jessison released had the
following statement for the press conference today:
“With everyone able to decide for themselves
what truth is my client has decided that this law that some people abide by does
not work for him. So therefore he should not be expected to be tried under a
relative law that is not only an old law that can be subject to many
interpretations and experiences but also one that should not be put upon my
client because of his own view of this law differing from his own personal moral
truth.
These stories are just examples of how two
truths can not exist. Either Genghis Khan existed or he didn’t. Either stealing
is wrong or it isn’t. Yet in our culture we seem to think life is dependent upon
the individual instead of a set truth. There are so many variables that may be
ok depending upon the person.
Let’s look at some examples of some beliefs that
some think are ok “if it works for the person”:
-
It is ok if you believe in God if it works for you but I don’t believe
and it works for me
-
All religions end up in the same place and teach basically the same thing
so it doesn’t matter which one you follow
-
I am not a homosexual or practice abortion but it is ok if others do
because it is their choice
As a side note it is also interesting at times
that one can have a certain belief in a god or practice and that is ok. However
if someone has a Christian belief against that god or practice, then the
Christian can be looked at as narrow-minded and prejudice. But that is another
subject for another time perhaps.
The point is only one truth can exist.
Now granted in some philosophies such as
Buddhism and Hinduism then there are multiple pathways based on your good
actions and intentions. However if Christianity is true then only Christ is the
way to heaven.
There are many either or statements which show
that truth cannot be seen in different ways. There has to be one truth
concerning different subjects.
1.
Either there is a God or there isn’t one
2.
Either Jesus existed or He didn’t
3.
Either Jesus is the only way or He isn’t
4.
Either a Being created the universe or it is an accident
5.
Either homosexuality is ok or it isn’t
6.
Either the unborn baby is alive or it isn’t
Now these I am not giving my personal beliefs
about any of these statements, although I would suspect that many people would
either assume or know my beliefs. My main purpose in writing this article is to
say that there can only be ONE truth about these subjects. The rest of eternity
is dependent upon the first three subjects (and possible the fourth one). These
either-or statements can not both be true.
The rest of these writings is to write
concerning why I believe that Christianity is the truth (I will not write about
abortion, evolution, or homosexuality in this series). Ultimately certain truths
will be revealed and it doesn’t matter what you or I believe. If I throw an
apple in the air, it will fall down again. It doesn’t matter if I believe that I
have physic power to keep it up or if I don’t believe in gravity.
Why would do I do this? Through reasons that I
will show, I believe that Christ is the only way to heaven. Jesus said that “I
am the way, the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.”
(John 14:6) If this statement is true than I can not follow another god or go
against what He teaches and it be ok. Either this statement is true or it is not
true. Eventually (once we die) than this thought will be proved without a doubt
of either being true or not. But by then it may be too late.
I hope you will stay with me through this
journey. I am looking forward to this and looking forward to any feedback
received. Please note this is not an attack on anyone in particular but a look
at reasons why I believe.
